Ang Barista at ang RTA

Of chance encounters and falling in love

They knew each other for quite a long time. But never did they imagine they would end up together. They work in the same building. Day after day the RTA buys coffee before work and the Barista happily prepares it for him exactly the way he wanted- 1 drip, size tall, with 4 cups of half and half milk and six sachets of brown sugar. Just like his favourite coffee, the RTA’s life is dark and bland. He plans his life the way he wants it. If schedules are not met, he becomes upset. But in terms of love, he used to be someone who’s all positive. He believed fairy tales can come true. He was a hopeless romantic. Now, he’s just hopeless. Since his first relationship, he thought it could last forever. He’s convinced that he would end up with the man the first time he met him. But forever seems so difficult to find the RTA. Relationships came after the other and still, the RTA tolerantly waited for true love. Holding on to his belief, he waited that prince charming will come and take him away from reality. Frustrated and desperate, the RTA never saw, heard nor even caught a glimpse of his prince saving him. But just like his drip coffee, he still waits for something to spice up its flavour.

On the other hand, the Barista is like a seasonal drink- whether it’s Toffeenut latte, cafe Verona or Peppermint Mocha. He just goes where the wind takes him. His life is a free-flow. But it was not easy going to his nonchalant road. He acquired this laid-back personality through years of being alone. With a gifted sister, the Barista faced life’s struggles without any parent to help him. That’s why he never waits nor looks for love. But he is not all cynic when it comes to true love. He gives relationship a chance but it failed him. And he didn’t care. He moves on with a cheery attitude, prioritizing his work, friends, sister, and lives life one second at a time. Like a seasonal coffee, the Barista enjoys his existence any chance he can get.

They are irony. All the RTA can think of is to jump into a relationship. The last thing on the Barista’s mind is a commitment. The RTA pleads and begs for true love. The Barista doesn’t care whether love passes him by. The RTA waits while the Barista just hang in there.

Seasons change and summer came. People in the city went to their favourite beach destination- Cayman Islands. The RTA and Barista were no exception. They came with their friends. The RTA finds a shift from a routinary work while the Barista just wants to spend a good time. They rode the same boat but they didn’t see each other. They tried to relax with different companies with little knowledge what fate has in store for them. Night came and the party started,

Common Friend: Hi Barista, this is my friend RTA.

RTA: Ui. Dito ka din pala.

Barista: Yep. Hndi ka nga namamansin eh.

RTA: Oi d ah. Kaw nga sayaw ng sayaw dyan eh! Tsaka andami mu kasama.

Barista: Ah mga friends ko. Kung may trip ka sa kanila sabihin mu lang. Papakilala kita. Kahit sino.

RTA: Eh pano kung sabihin ko kaw ang trip ko?

After uttering those lines, they gazed at each other’s eyes. The Barista saw the RTA’s loneliness and deep longing to be loved while the RTA felt that the Barista is looking and piercing straight into his soul. Feeling the heat of the moment, couple with cool summer night breeze, the two kissed. They kissed as if there are no tomorrow. They didn’t mind what the people around them would think. Lips locked and bodies entwined, the RTA curled up his arms around the Barista’s shoulders, feeling safe and secured. While the Barista, using his hands, gently touches the RTA’s face and softly put pressures on it. They didn’t care the Pussycat Doll’s “Don’t Cha” loudly hitting the airwaves because the only sound they can hear are the breaths slowly coming out of their mouths. They felt they own the world.

The morning after,

Barista’s text: I had a gr8 tym last nyt.

RTA’s text: Yeah. Same hir. Do u wana go out sumtym?

Barista’s text: Sure. Txt2 na lng. C u sa mnila.

And Manila they came. They went out on a date the weekend after. They felt sparks while walking under a clear evening sky. Not only do they look good together but they also feel incredibly and romantically comfortable with each other. Feeling indefinite, the RTA asks their status. The Barista thinks they’re not yet ready to commit and said he doesn’t want to rush into things. So the RTA waited. Days and months of dating but still, no status update from the Barista. The RTA started to wonder of a “relationship déjà vu” and confessed to the Barista of his true feelings, how he can’t picture himself without him for even one day while the Barista shows no effort of even planning a romantic weekend getaway for them. The RTA felt that if the Barista won’t be ready now, he would never be ready ever and he thought of quitting the game before his heart gets hurt again.

What the RTA didn’t know, the Barista also contemplated things on his own. He can’t believe he fell in love this fast and scared he might not be able to handle a long-term relationship. He wondered how one summer night magically makes him so happy yet so confused of what he needs to do. He’s got work as priority, a sister to take care of and, family papers to resolve. But he needs to decide. And he decides to do it asap.

As of the writing, the RTA and the Barista are still contented and happily together. The Barista still has the same responsibilities while the RTA is no longer an RTA. In spite of this, they still feel the same old kilig feeling whenever they see each other. Now, the RTA learns not to plan ahead anymore and the Barista tries his best to always show his affection towards the RTA. But still, after 8 months (and counting!) into the relationship, whenever they’re together they still see sparks and feel the cool summer night breezing into them.
